It is a kind of arthritis which occurs when flexible tissue around the ends of bones wears down over time. 1. Dashmool

Dashamoola or Dashamula (also known as Dashmool) is a name given to ten roots of medicinal plants which is used widely in Ayurveda for many health conditions (related to nerves, muscles, bones and joints).

Dashamoola is used mainly for Vata Dosha (has also been noted to normalize Kapha Dosha).

The 10 herbal roots used in the Ayurvedic formulation of Dashamoola are:

There are many combination compounds that involve Dashamula to address certain conditions. The most promising use of Dashamoola is to treat arthritis, swelling, pain, inflammation and respiratory problems (asthma and cough).

2. Ajwain

Ajwain, known as Carom seeds, is packed with numerous health benefits. Primarily for pain, ajwain is a powerful remedy for people suffering from arthritis or bone-joint pains.

Its effective anti-inflammatory power cures arthritic pain, swelling, inflammation and other associated symptoms. Apart from its anti-inflammatory powers, ajwain has equally effective anesthetic properties which is highly effective in soothing swelling and reducing all kinds of inflammation.

To use ajwain in pain conditions, take a tub of hot water and add a spoonful of ajwain and mix it properly. Once the ajwain-water is ready, apply it (soak) on aching joints and keep it still for 5 minutes.

Repeat this process for 5-6 times and you will see how ajwain eases swelling and pain. If this method doesn’t suit you, alternatively, crush ajwain seeds and apply its paste on the joint pain. You can apply the ajwain paste 3 times a day.

You can also drink ajwain water every day before breakfast.

3. Nirgundi

Nirgundi, also known as five-leaved chaste tree, is an Ayurvedic plant which is used for all kinds of joint pains. Nirgundi in Sanskrit translates to “one which protects the body from all kinds of pain”..

The plant possesses medicinal properties and consuming Nirgundi reduces swelling and all kinds of excessive pain in the body. It is said to have excellent anti-inflammatory properties and each part of the Nirgundi plant is utilized in the form of paste, powder and oil.

As per Ayurvedic scriptures, Nirgundi has Katu and Tikta Rasa which is highly effective in balancing Vata and Kapha Doshas. It has nishindine alkaloid which has analgesic, anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.

Abhyanga: Ayurvedic oil massage
