What is Hair Loss or Hair Fall?

Hair loss from the scalp results in thinning, patchiness, or even baldness. Hair loss in patches or patterns, dandruff, skin lesions, and scarring are some of the symptoms of hair loss.

In medical terms, the hair follicle growth occurs in cycles. At the end of the phase, the hair falls out and a new hair starts growing in the follicle beginning the cycle again. Normally, about 0–78 hairs reach the end of the phase and fall out. When more than 100 hairs fall out per day, it is known as hair loss.

Vitamins such as Biotin, Niacin (Vitamin B3) and Vitamin C, and minerals such as Zinc and Iron, are very essential for hair growth. Deficiencies of these vitamins and minerals may cause hair loss.

There are many other factors for hair loss. Some of the widely accepted ones are increasing age, medical conditions like diabetes, high levels of stress and weight loss.

There are 3 most common types of hair loss:

1. Male or Female hair loss: Permanent hair loss from the scalp. The cause of male-pattern hair loss is a combination of genetics and male hormones. Whereas the cause of female pattern hair loss is unclear.
2. Alopecia areata: Sudden hair loss with circular bald patches.
3. Telogen effluvium: When hair falls out after a stressful experience (reversible condition).

It is advised to massage coconut oil onto the scalp and leave it for 20 minutes (before you wash it off). If hair is dry, one should leave the massage scalp for a longer period (20-25 minutes).

Hair Loss in Pregnancy

Hair loss is very common after childbirth (in the postpartum period). Such hair loss doesn’t cause baldness, but it is an excessive hair shedding which is caused by sudden drop in the hormone estrogen level and iron deficiency.
