High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
High blood pressure (Hypertension) is a health condition in which the pressure of the blood against the artery walls (heart) is high. As we known that the blood is carried from the heart (in the vessels) to all other parts of the human body.
When the heart beats, blood is pumped into the vessels and this is called blood pressure. It is defined by the force of blood pushing against the walls of arteries. It is a serious medical condition affecting the heart as higher the pressure of the blood, the harder the heart has to pump.

In Ayurvedic knowledge the blood pressure is determined by functions (standalone or combined) of Prana Vayu, Vyana Vayu, Sadhaka Pitta, Avalambaka Kapha, Rasa and Rakta Dhatu (all these are situated in Hridaya or Heart).
The other Ayurvedic names of High Blood Pressure are Dhamani Prapurana, Rakta Vikshepa, Raktagata Vata, Avrita Vata, Siragata Vata, Vyana Prakopa, Raktamada and Vyana Atibala.
Going deep (as per the texts of Charaka Samhita, Sutra Sthana), the blood vessels are known as “Sirah” in Ayurveda. The function of blood returning towards the heart is controlled by the function of Samana Vata. The Vyana Vata is responsible for blood circulation. Vata Dosha forces the blood out of the heart and is responsible to distribute it throughout the body. Vyana Vata is also responsible for ejection of the blood.
In medical terms, hypertension or high blood pressure is defined as blood pressure above 140 mmHg systolic & 90 mmHg diastolic and is considered severe condition of blood pressure when the readings are above 180 mmHg systolic & 120 mmHg diastolic.
The normal blood pressure of a healthy person is 120 mmHg systolic and 80 mmHg diastolic.
Some of the factors which cause high blood pressure are an improper life-style and unhealthy food habits, stress factors, excess of anger and fear. An excess of alcohol and salt intake can also trigger Hypertension.
Imbalanced blood plasma volume and hormone activity can also be causing factors of Primary Hypertension. Secondary Hypertension is a complication of another health problem.
Usually, high blood pressure has no symptoms, but a person suffering from it can witness one or all of the following symptoms – constant headache, severe tiredness, impulsive irritability, an increase in body temperature and urinary symptoms. Over time, it can cause other serious health conditions, such as heart disease and heart stroke.
Remedies of Hypertension
The foremost remedy for High Blood Pressure is to make lifestyle and dietary changes. One must avoid staying awake at night, sleeping in daytime, sleeping immediately after meals, having late-night meals, having irregular meals, excess consumption of alcohol, excess intake of salt, excess smoking, getting too angry or too anxious.
- Reduce Salt Intake: The average salt intake is said to be between 9 grams to 12 grams per day. But for people with Hypertension, it is recommended to reduce salt intake under 5 grams a day.
- Lowering Alcohol Consumption: An excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided at any cost. A maximum of two alcoholic drinks a day for men and one for women is recommended once is a week.
- Eat more Fruits and Vegetables: Such people should eat more seasonal fruits and fresh vegetables with less fat consumption. People with high blood pressure should eat as little saturated and total fat. They should opt low fat dairy products. They also should avoid all kinds of trans fats, hydrogenated vegetable oils, and animal fats.
- Regulating Body Weight: Excess body weight or obesity is one of the most common factors of Hypertension. To avoid it, weight loss should be the aim. Regulating body weight can be very highly beneficial to cure Hypertension.
- Squeezed peach juice should be consumed on a daily basis (three times a day). You can also add a teaspoon of coriander and a pinch of cardamom to it.
- Consume lentil soup (moong dal soup) with cumin and turmeric. Moong Dal is highly effective in lowering the high blood pressure.
- Drinking orange juice mixed with coconut water (2:1 ratio) for two to three times a day can be of great help.
- One should eat more potassium-rich foods such as leafy green vegetables, tomatoes, potatoes, sweet-potatoes, melons, bananas, avocados, oranges, tuna, salmon and beans.
